Felixstowe Hockey Club ladies 1st team started off the new season in style at the weekend, clinching a 13-0 win over local rivals Ipswich in the opening match.
This is the biggest ever margin of victory recorded by a Felixstowe ladies team – and wasn’t the only impressive stat of the weekend.
Following the influx of new players into the club post-Olympics, eight ladies made their playing debuts for the lades 3rd team too. Not only that, but attendees at youth training passed the 125 mark for the first time including five new youth players wanting to play in goal, spurred on by the ‘Maddie Hinch effect’ which is being seen all over the nation.
Club Head Coach Marc Lloyd said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season from the ladies. The eight new players thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have already signed up for next week, whilst the ladies 1st team were just majestic against Ipswich and have thrown down a significant marker for the teams around them. Our ladies 2nd team also started off the season with a clean sheet in a 5-0 win, so it was fantastic all round.”
“Our youth section is blossoming and they are really enjoying emulating their Olympic heroes – in all teams this weekend we had nine players who have only just moved from youth to senior hockey. It’s exciting times at Felixstowe!”
Five of the youth players who have made the step up to senior hockey are in the men’s section of the club – which has also seen some significant growth. The men’s 4th team are expecting to field five new players when they start the season in a couple of weeks’ time.
