Youth Success
Felixstowe Hockey Clubs Youth section has grown from having 0 members in December 2011 to a staggering 14 members now. Monthly sessions were offered to children on Saturdays which has now progressed to weekly sessions.
Great support has been received from local primary schools and high schools within the Suffolk Coastal District, as well as from current members of the hockey club. Without the support of these groups of individuals, our Youth section would not have taken off with such great success.
However, we still need volunteers to help run the Saturday morning sessions, so if you can spare an hour, please contact Kirsty.
In July, two teams were put together from Thomas Mills High School and another individual from a school in Ipswich to represent Suffolk Coastal in the Suffolk Youth Games 2011.
The two teams consisted of Boys U14 and Girls U14, both managed and coached by one individual. Our Boys team did superbly and got through to the semi final of the tournament. They went on to win the semi final on penalty flicks with some amazing saves from the GK and shooting from the other players.
The final was very close and very intense, however our boys let the game slip away in the final few minutes of the game, going home with a well deserved second place. The Girls team also showed some excellent skills and team work and went home with the trophy for the tournament.
One of the girls from Suffolk Coastal won player of the tournament and went home with a well deserved prize of a new hockey stick.
From this success, other youngsters from the day performing in other sports decided they wanted to give hockey a go and join Felixstowe Hockey Club.Looking to the future of the Youth section, we intend to hold family fun days, arrange inter-school tournaments between local high schools, set up monthly taster sessions within local primary schools ending the year with an Olympic style tournament between the schools.
