Debutants Young & Old

Debutants Young & Old

Matthew Davies18 Sep 2023 - 08:02

It's never too early or late to start playing hockey!

The start of the 2023-24 season has seen some records tumble in the highly-competitive (and let's be honest, very important!) world of senior winter league debut age.

For the last few seasons, current first team player Harry Keegan has been the record-holder for the youngest player at debut, being 13 years and 1 day old on his debut back in 2017. However, with a change in the league rules allowing 12-year-olds to play in development teams this season, it was only a matter of time before this record was broken.

Indeed, on the first weekend of this season, Diggory Davies (L) made his debut at 12 years and 45 days. Coincidentally, his team-mate that day was Harry's dad Denis Keegan (R), who was also making his debut at the other end of the age scale - his nippy performance belied his mature years, in what must be a record oldest debut at 62 years and 143 days.

Diggory's record is unlikely to last long though, as young Jasper Burton is due to make his debut this coming Saturday, and he'll be 12 years and just 19 days. Jasper has impressed whilst progressing through the junior section and is raring to go!

Who knows how long Denis's record will stand...? Hockey is a sport for all ages, and it's never too late to start! Come and watch the action at Felixstowe Hockey Club on Saturdays, and come and pick up a stick at training on Tuesday evenings.
